At first, I thought it was just a fictional narrative, but when I started connecting it to the real world, I was shocked by its relevance. I heard a thought-provoking riddle from one of the characters in Game of Thrones. A king, a priest, and a rich man sit in a room. Between them stands a sellsword. Each great man bids the sellsword to kill the other two. Who lives? Who dies? At first glance, the answer seems simple—the one holding the sword has the power to decide. But does he? Initially, I thought this was just a clever plot device meant for the world of the series. But when I started connecting it to the present world, I was in utter shock at how real this concept is.

Now, replace the king with a politician, the priest with an influencer, and the rich man with a billionaire CEO. The sellsword? That’s the common person—the worker, the voter, the consumer. We often assume that those at the top—governments, corporations, celebrities—control the world. But what if the real power isn’t in their hands, but in ours?

The Power We Give Away

Think about how governments function. Laws are enforced not because every citizen is watched 24/7, but because people believe in the system. Elections happen not because a leader is truly powerful, but because people collectively agree to vote. Similarly, social media influencers don’t have power on their own—it’s the millions who follow them, share their posts, and engage with their content that make them influential.

Companies dictate trends, but only because consumers buy into them. If everyone stopped using a product overnight, no amount of marketing could save it. Billionaires seem untouchable, but their wealth is tied to the belief that money has value. The moment that belief is shaken—like during economic crashes—the illusion starts breaking.

Who is Truly in Control?

Consider a controversial law being passed. The government signs it, the media debates it, the police enforce it. But if people stop believing in its legitimacy, protests erupt, businesses shut down, and even the most powerful politicians struggle to keep control. History has shown this time and again—dictators fall, corporations collapse, and revolutions rise when enough people stop believing in the system.

Or look at cancel culture. Celebrities with millions of followers can lose everything overnight when public opinion shifts. Their power was never theirs—it was borrowed from the people who once admired them. The moment that admiration is withdrawn, their influence vanishes.

The Modern-Day Sellsword

In today’s world, the “sellsword” is every individual. We are the ones carrying out the commands of those in power—whether it’s through voting, working, consuming, or spreading ideas. But the real question is: do we realize the power we hold?

If a politician loses votes, they become powerless. If a CEO’s company loses customers, their wealth crumbles. If an influencer loses engagement, their fame fades. Power is not taken—it is given.

Breaking the Illusion

The biggest trick of power is making people believe it is absolute. But in reality, it’s fragile. It only exists as long as people uphold it. So, the next time you see someone at the top—whether in politics, business, or entertainment—ask yourself:

1. Do they hold power, or have we given it to them?

2. If we stop believing in their influence, what happens next?

3. Are we following them out of choice, or because we’ve been conditioned to?

The moment we recognize our own power is the moment we stop being controlled by illusions. Because in the end, power doesn’t reside in titles or wealth—it resides where people believe it does.

अब, राजा की जगह राजनेता, पुजारी की जगह प्रभावशाली व्यक्ति और अमीर आदमी की जगह अरबपति सीईओ रख दें। दलाल? वह आम आदमी है- कर्मचारी, मतदाता, उपभोक्ता। हम अक्सर यह मान लेते हैं कि शीर्ष पर बैठे लोग- सरकारें, निगम, मशहूर हस्तियां- दुनिया को नियंत्रित करते हैं। लेकिन क्या होगा अगर असली ताकत उनके हाथ में न होकर हमारे हाथ में हो?

हम जो ताकत देते हैं

सोचें कि सरकारें कैसे काम करती हैं। कानून इसलिए लागू नहीं होते क्योंकि हर नागरिक पर चौबीसों घंटे नज़र रखी जाती है, बल्कि इसलिए क्योंकि लोग सिस्टम में विश्वास करते हैं। चुनाव इसलिए नहीं होते क्योंकि कोई नेता वाकई शक्तिशाली होता है, बल्कि इसलिए होते हैं क्योंकि लोग सामूहिक रूप से वोट देने के लिए सहमत होते हैं। इसी तरह, सोशल मीडिया के प्रभावशाली लोगों के पास खुद की ताकत नहीं होती- यह वे लाखों लोग होते हैं जो उन्हें फॉलो करते हैं, उनके पोस्ट शेयर करते हैं और उनकी सामग्री से जुड़ते हैं जो उन्हें प्रभावशाली बनाते हैं।

कंपनियां ट्रेंड तय करती हैं, लेकिन केवल इसलिए क्योंकि उपभोक्ता उन्हें खरीदते हैं। अगर हर कोई रातों-रात किसी उत्पाद का इस्तेमाल करना बंद कर दे, तो कोई भी मार्केटिंग उसे बचा नहीं सकती।  अरबपति अछूत लगते हैं, लेकिन उनकी संपत्ति इस विश्वास से जुड़ी है कि पैसे का मूल्य है। जिस क्षण यह विश्वास डगमगाता है – जैसे आर्थिक मंदी के दौरान – भ्रम टूटने लगता है।

वास्तव में नियंत्रण किसका है?

एक विवादास्पद कानून पारित होने पर विचार करें। सरकार उस पर हस्ताक्षर करती है, मीडिया उस पर बहस करती है, पुलिस उसे लागू करती है। लेकिन अगर लोग इसकी वैधता पर विश्वास करना बंद कर देते हैं, तो विरोध प्रदर्शन शुरू हो जाते हैं, व्यवसाय बंद हो जाते हैं, और यहां तक कि सबसे शक्तिशाली राजनेता भी नियंत्रण रखने के लिए संघर्ष करते हैं। इतिहास ने इसे बार-बार दिखाया है – जब पर्याप्त लोग सिस्टम में विश्वास करना बंद कर देते हैं तो तानाशाह गिर जाते हैं, निगम ढह जाते हैं, और क्रांतियाँ उठती हैं।

या कैंसल कल्चर को देखें। लाखों फॉलोअर्स वाले सेलिब्रिटी रातों-रात सब कुछ खो सकते हैं जब जनता की राय बदल जाती है। उनकी शक्ति कभी उनकी नहीं थी – यह उन लोगों से उधार ली गई थी जो कभी उनकी प्रशंसा करते थे। जिस क्षण प्रशंसा वापस ले ली जाती है, उनका प्रभाव गायब हो जाता है।

आधुनिक समय का सेल्सवर्ड

आज की दुनिया में, “सेल्सवर्ड” हर व्यक्ति है।  हम ही सत्ता में बैठे लोगों के आदेशों का पालन करते हैं – चाहे वह वोटिंग के ज़रिए हो, काम करने के ज़रिए हो, उपभोग करने के ज़रिए हो या विचारों को फैलाने के ज़रिए हो। लेकिन असली सवाल यह है: क्या हमें एहसास है कि हमारे पास कितनी शक्ति है?

अगर कोई राजनेता वोट खो देता है, तो वह शक्तिहीन हो जाता है। अगर किसी सीईओ की कंपनी के ग्राहक खो जाते हैं, तो उसकी संपत्ति खत्म हो जाती है। अगर कोई प्रभावशाली व्यक्ति जुड़ाव खो देता है, तो उसकी प्रसिद्धि फीकी पड़ जाती है। शक्ति ली नहीं जाती – दी जाती है।

भ्रम को तोड़ना

शक्ति की सबसे बड़ी चाल लोगों को यह विश्वास दिलाना है कि यह निरपेक्ष है। लेकिन वास्तव में, यह नाजुक है। यह तभी तक मौजूद है जब तक लोग इसे बनाए रखते हैं। इसलिए, अगली बार जब आप किसी को शीर्ष पर देखें – चाहे वह राजनीति, व्यवसाय या मनोरंजन में हो – तो खुद से पूछें:

1. क्या उनके पास शक्ति है, या हमने उन्हें दी है?

2. अगर हम उनके प्रभाव पर विश्वास करना बंद कर दें, तो आगे क्या होगा?

3. क्या हम अपनी मर्जी से उनका अनुसरण कर रहे हैं, या इसलिए क्योंकि हमें ऐसा करने के लिए तैयार किया गया है?

जिस क्षण हम अपनी शक्ति को पहचान लेते हैं, उसी क्षण हम भ्रम से नियंत्रित होना बंद कर देते हैं। क्योंकि आखिरकार, शक्ति उपाधियों या धन में नहीं होती – यह वहाँ होती है जहाँ लोग मानते हैं कि यह होती है।
