Today, as I sit here scrolling through endless options on my smartphone, I can’t help but feel a pang of nostalgia for those days when life was slower, yet somehow fuller. When the biggest decisions were about which game to play next or which TV show to watch. When happiness wasn’t just a click away but something we worked for, something we earned. 

The Joy of Outdoor Play: Cricket and Beyond

Do you remember the sound of a tennis ball hitting a wooden bat? Or the thrill of setting up bricks as stumps and arguing over whose turn it was to bat? For us 90s kids, cricket wasn’t just a game; it was a way of life. We’d play from sunrise to sunset, ignoring the scolding from parents who’d yell, “It’s getting dark! Come home!” But did we listen? Of course not. We’d keep playing until the last ray of sunlight disappeared, and even then, we’d promise to continue the match the next day. 

It wasn’t just cricket, though. There were endless games—hide and seek, lagori, and even those impromptu races down the street. We didn’t need fancy equipment or organized teams. All we needed was a ball, a few friends, and a whole lot of imagination. 

The Cassette Era: 8 Games in 1 and the Pride of Owning a Video Game

Then there were the video games. Oh, the sheer pride of owning that one cassette with 8 games! Cricket, Mario, Contra, Tank—each game felt like a new world to conquer. I still remember the excitement of plugging in the console, blowing into the cartridge (because that somehow made it work), and spending hours trying to beat that one level in Mario where you had to jump over the turtles. 

And let’s not forget the trips to the game center. My brothers and I would save up our pocket money or plead to our parents just to play EA Sports Cricket for an hour. The thrill of hitting a six or taking a wicket felt almost as real as playing outside. Later, when they got a computer at home, we’d spend entire afternoons playing Road Rash or Need for Speed, laughing and competing like there was no tomorrow. Those moments weren’t just about the games; they were about bonding, about creating memories that would last a lifetime. 

The TV Shows We Lived For: MAD, Power Rangers, and CID

But it wasn’t all about playing outside or gaming. The 90s were also about the TV shows that defined our childhood. Who could forget MAD? That show was pure genius—creative, hilarious, and utterly unforgettable. We’d wait all week for Sunday just to watch it, and if we missed an episode, there was no re-telecast. We’d have to wait another whole week, and somehow, that made it even more special. 

Then there were the Power Rangers. Oh, how we’d imitate their moves, pretending to save the world from evil forces. And CID—the ultimate family ritual. Solving mysteries with ACP Pradyuman and his team felt like we were part of the action. These shows weren’t just entertainment; they were a shared experience, something we’d talk about with friends the next day at school. 

The Unreal Passage of Time: Then vs. Now

Today, everything is at our fingertips. We have smartphones, streaming services, and endless options for entertainment. But somehow, it doesn’t feel the same. Back then, we had to work for our fun. We had to wait for Sunday to watch our favorite show or save up to play a game at the center. And that made every moment more rewarding. 

Now, as I look back, it feels almost unreal how time has flown. The cassette games are gone, replaced by high-definition consoles. The outdoor cricket matches have turned into online gaming sessions. And the TV shows we loved are now just nostalgic clips on YouTube. But the memories? They’re still here, vivid and alive, bringing a smile to my face and sometimes, a tear to my eye.

क्या आपको टेनिस बॉल के लकड़ी के बल्ले से टकराने की आवाज़ याद है? या ईंटों को स्टंप के रूप में स्थापित करने और इस बात पर बहस करने का रोमांच कि बल्लेबाजी करने की बारी किसकी है? हम 90 के दशक के बच्चों के लिए, क्रिकेट सिर्फ़ एक खेल नहीं था; यह जीने का एक तरीका था। हम सूर्योदय से सूर्यास्त तक खेलते थे, माता-पिता की डांट को अनदेखा करते हुए जो चिल्लाते थे, “अंधेरा हो रहा है! घर आ जाओ!” लेकिन क्या हमने सुना? बिल्कुल नहीं।  हम तब तक खेलते रहते थे जब तक सूरज की आखिरी किरण गायब नहीं हो जाती थी, और तब भी, हम अगले दिन मैच जारी रखने का वादा करते थे।

अब, जब मैं पीछे मुड़कर देखता हूँ, तो मुझे लगभग अवास्तविक लगता है कि समय कैसे उड़ गया। कैसेट गेम चले गए हैं, उनकी जगह हाई-डेफ़िनेशन कंसोल ने ले ली है। आउटडोर क्रिकेट मैच ऑनलाइन गेमिंग सेशन में बदल गए हैं।  और जो टीवी शो हमें पसंद थे, वे अब YouTube पर सिर्फ़ पुरानी यादें ताज़ा करने वाले क्लिप बनकर रह गए हैं। लेकिन यादें? वे अभी भी यहाँ हैं, जीवंत और जीवंत, मेरे चेहरे पर मुस्कान लाती हैं और कभी-कभी, मेरी आँखों में आँसू ला देती हैं।
