Subhashitas are ancient Indian verses or proverbs that convey profound wisdom and moral teachings. They are often written in Sanskrit and have been passed down through generations.

पिबन्ति नद्य: स्वयमेव नाम्भ: स्वयम् न खादन्ति फलानि वृक्षा: ।
नादन्ति सस्यम् खलु वारिवाहः परोपकाराय सताम् विभूतय: ॥
English – The rivers don’t drink their own water. The trees don’t eat their own fruits. The clouds don’t eat the crops to which they give the water. The wealth of the good-natured people (‘sajjan’) is really only for helping the others. (They themselves don’t consume what they produce!)
Kannada – ನದಿಗಳು ತಮ್ಮ ನೀರನ್ನು ಕುಡಿಯುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಮರಗಳು ತಮ್ಮ ಹಣ್ಣುಗಳನ್ನು ತಿನ್ನುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಮೋಡಗಳು ನೀರು ಕೊಡುವ ಬೆಳೆಗಳನ್ನು ತಿನ್ನುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಒಳ್ಳೆಯ ಸ್ವಭಾವದ ಜನರ (‘ಸಜ್ಜನ’) ಸಂಪತ್ತು ನಿಜವಾಗಿಯೂ ಇತರರಿಗೆ ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡಲು ಮಾತ್ರ. (ಅವರು ಉತ್ಪಾದಿಸುವದನ್ನು ಅವರು ಸ್ವತಃ ಸೇವಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ!)
Hindi – नदियाँ अपना जल स्वयं नहीं पीती हैं। पेड़ अपने फल खुद नहीं खाते। बादल उन फसलों को नहीं खाते जिन्हें वे पानी देते हैं। नेक लोगों (‘सज्जन’) का धन वास्तव में दूसरों की मदद करने के लिए ही होता है। (वे स्वयं जो उत्पादन करते हैं उसका उपभोग नहीं करते!)
Sanskrit – नद्यः स्वजलं न पिबन्ति। वृक्षाः स्वफलं न खादन्ति। मेघाः न खादन्ति सस्यानि यस्मै जलं ददति। सद्भाविनां (‘सज्जन्’) धनं वस्तुतः अन्येषां साहाय्यार्थमेव भवति। (ते स्वयं यत् उत्पादयन्ति तत् न सेवन्ते!)
